Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

In order to have a thorough understanding the Baba Nyonya heritage, it is worthwhile to pay a visit to Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum in Malacca. It is located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, adjacent to Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) where it is only a 10-minute walk away.

Established in 1896, the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum illustrates the way of living of the Peranakans, a unique blend of the east and the west. The museum, which was renovated from 3 well-preserved townhouses is privately owned and run by the local Babas (males) and Nyonyas (females).

Before stepping in, the museum with wall painted in light peach colour and classic wooden window and door will give you a warm welcome even from afar. Within the walls of this heritage building, you can learn everything there is to know about this unique culture.

The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum showcases valuable antique such as hand-craved wooden furniture, precious dinnerware made of ceramics and their traditional costumes. Through the antique furniture, you can see their spectacular craftsmanship where they turned wood into bulky but unique furniture like chairs and tables. Ceramics and costumes presented in the museum will tell you their lifestyle.

The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum is closed on Sundays and public holidays.  The visiting time is 10 am to 12:30 pm, and 2 pm to 4:30 pm.

Though the entrance to the museum is considered high, if compare to other normal and convention museum, it is an exclusive gateway for you to know more about the interesting and unique culture of Baba Nyonya in Melaka. The museum offers guided tours (by appointment), research facilities and audio visuals. It is well worth a visit! This is the map.
